Potato Stamps

Kids CraftsPotato Shirt

Potatoes.  Who would have thought you could take something so common and turn it into a creative stamp?  My daughter loved doing this project and so did I. I would say this is great for all ages.  You can not only do shirts but I have actually seen people design their own stamps and make pillows and other home decor items.  I have even seen them used as stencils on walls.

Since Valentines Day is coming up, my daughter wanted a shirt that she could wear to school.  Since we are living in South Korea, it is a little hard to find the cute shirts like we could at Target in the past.  I think she actually enjoyed this a lot more because she was actually able to make her own. Below are the super simple directions.

Supplies:

  • Raw Potatoes
  • Cookie Cutters (or you can be adventurous and create your own designs)
  • Knife (obviously for the parent, do not let your child use it!)
  • Acrylic paints
  • Shirt
  • Paintbrushes ( These are optional)
  1. Cut the Potatoes in half, then push the cookie cutters into the potato.
  2. Use the knife to cut around the cookie cutter so you have your very own stamp.
  3. Make sure when preparing the shirt, you put a piece of cardboard in between the front and back to prevent any bleeding of the paint.  This also helps to keep the shirt smooth so your child can stamp away without the shirt moving around.
  4.  Dip the potato stamp into the paint and stamp the shirt.  That easy!
  5.  If you want to touch up any of the stamps, you can use the paintbrushes for that.
  6.  Let it dry for about an hour.
